Father René Favron arrived in Réunion in 1939 and noted the severe impoverishment of the local population and high infant mortality rates while serving in Saint-Louis. From 1946, he began converting a garage at the parish house into a care space. With a donation of 1.5 hectares of land in 1949, he initiated the construction of a children's hospital, supported by fundraising and public subsidies. The first hospital, featuring 47 beds, opened in 1953 and quickly became overwhelmed, prompting the addition of a new wing in 1957. In 1966-67, architect Guy Lejeune designed a new 250-bed children's hospital, now known as the Charles Isautier Medical-Social Institute.
