Banque nationale de Belgique

Office · by Désiré De Keyser

Boulevard de Berlaimont 14, Belgium

The structure that currently houses the library, was constructed between 1872 and 1874 for the Union du Crédit. De Keyser opted for a typical late-19th century bank style of architecture, which reflects both authority and prestige. The abundant light and imposing spaces were intended to mirror the institution's power and instill confidence among its clients. Since both the activities and the workforce of the Bank were constantly expanding, the architect Beyaert was asked to extend the headquarters for the first time in 1871.
