château de Lichtenberg, Lichtenberg, France

The Château de Lichtenberg was built by Conrad de Lichtenberg in the early 13th century and underwent several transformations, notably by Daniel Specklin in the 16th century. The Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg converted it into an opulent residence and fortress. Fortified by Sébastien Le Prestre Vauban in 1678, it housed a Franco-German garrison until 1870. The Franco-Prussian War bombings diminished its military significance, leading to its classification as a historic monument in 1878. However, the castle's preservation deteriorated throughout the 20th century.
