The Konsumverein für Strassburg und Umgegend, founded in 1902, aimed to collectively purchase and produce goods to provide lower prices for the working class. Its first store opened the same year in the Petite France district of Strasbourg. In 1911, the city granted land on the Île de l’Éperon at the Port du Rhin, leading to the establishment of the cooperative's headquarters, inaugurated in 1912. The cooperative experienced rapid growth, achieving the fourth position among the largest cooperative societies in France by 1932, based on the number of members.
