Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde

Religion · by Giraudet, Fabre, Rocher, Degusseau G. · 1950

falaise d'Amont, Etretat, France

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde was originally built in 1856 on the Amont cliff to honor sailors lost at sea but was destroyed during World War II. It was reconstructed in 1950 in the neo-Gothic style by architect Alfred Giraudet, with contributions from the Lanfry company of Rouen. The new chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of the Guard, was consecrated by Archbishop Martin of Rouen, with René Coty, then Vice President of the Council of the Republic, in attendance. The interior adaptations received a subsequent blessing from Auxiliary Bishop Lemonnier of Rouen. The stained glass windows, designed in 1964 by the painter Maurice Rocher, were crafted by the Degusseau workshop from Orléans.
