Condominio in viale Piave

by C. Pagani, V. Viganò · 1952

Viale Piave 20, Milano, Italy

This mixed-use condominium combines a commercial ground floor with eight residential levels above. Two apartments per floor are organized around a central stair, with kitchens and living rooms facing the street and bedrooms oriented toward the courtyard. Deep balconies extend the interiors outdoors, while 45-degree inclined structural walls and solid parapets shape the façade and create strong light-and-shadow effects. The building’s appearance shifts depending on the viewpoint, and the original multi-color façade scheme has largely been lost under a single brown repaint. Street-level shopfronts and an elevated cornice emphasize the base and the crown, including a grocery-and-perfume store designed by Viganò.
