Couvent de la Clarté-Dieu

Religion · by Arsène-Henry Xavier, Arsène-Henry Luc, Besnard-Bernadac Emmanuel · 1953

95 rue de Paris, Orsay, France

In 1952, Franciscan Father Pol de Léon commissioned brothers Luc and Xavier Arsène-Henry, along with architect Emmanuel Besnard-Bernadac, to design a convent on a five-hectare wooded site in Orsay. Construction began in 1954, with the layout consisting of buildings arranged around a cloister, adapted to the sloped terrain. The structures, built on unstable ground, rest on concrete piles driven seven meters deep. The walls are made of white cement concrete panels, backed with hollow blocks featuring an air gap for insulation, and finished with light-colored plaster on the interior.
