E-1027
House · by Eileen Gray · 1929
306 Escalier Massolin, 06190 Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France
Designed by Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray between 1926 and 1929, Villa E-1027 is a masterpiece of early modern architecture. Built for her partner Jean Badovici on the French Riviera, the villa combines modernist principles, like pilotis, open plans, and ribbon windows, with Gray’s signature attention to detail, comfort, and human scale.
The name "E-1027" is a coded tribute: E for Eileen, 10 for J (Jean), 2 for B (Badovici), and 7 for G (Gray).
Though often associated with Le Corbusier, who later painted controversial murals inside, the villa is first and foremost a testament to Gray’s pioneering vision. After years of neglect, it has been fully restored and is now open to the public, a lasting legacy of one of modernism’s unsung heroines.
