Iidabashi Oedo Station

Japan

The Ōedo Line addition at Iidabashi Station was designed by Makoto Sei Watanabe as an experiment in infrastructure made visible. A fluorescent-green “Webframe” of steel pipes spreads across ceilings, integrating lighting and giving the underground space a distinct identity. The project is associated with early algorithmic design methods, using computation to generate structure from constraints. Above ground, a ventilation tower called “Wing” marks the station’s presence in the city.
