Immeuble « Au Printemps » actuellement Galeries Lafayette
Commerce · by Kalfon Merlande · 1934
8-10 rue Victor-Schoelcher ; 32-34 rue Antoine-Siger ; 29 rue Lamartine, Fort-de-France, France
The building "Au Printemps," constructed in 1934, was commissioned by Mr. Merlande and executed by an unknown contractor, with Kalfon handling the construction. Initially, part of the structure housed the U.S. consulate. As the first large department store in Martinique, "Au Printemps" is a skillful imitation of its Parisian counterpart and was quickly acquired by Mr. Rimbaud, with several subsequent owners. Significant consolidation work was carried out by Louis Caillat, including elevation of the glass roof. Modernization efforts in 2000 altered the building's spatial perception, leading to compartmentalization, with some interior ironwork of the staircase lost, though the "M" of "Merlande" remains visible.
