23 rue de l'Espérance, Roubaix, France
In 1923, Jean Lebas, the socialist mayor of Roubaix, commissioned architect Albert Baert to design municipal baths, aiming to create "the most beautiful swimming pool in France." Renowned for similar projects, Baert constructed the facility between 1927 and 1932, which became a symbol of aquatic sports and a public bathing establishment. This design reflected the municipality's hygienic and social concerns, showcasing Baert's expertise in creating functional yet aesthetically significant architecture. The site remains a notable landmark in Roubaix, transforming the concept of public swimming facilities.
