Pharaoh House
Collective housing · by helmut bayer · 1974
Fritz-Meyer-Weg 55, Munich
This high-rise is all about stacked horizontality: continuous balcony bands that wrap the tower like strata. The repetition is hypnotic, but the slight shifts in depth and shadow keep it from becoming flat or purely diagrammatic. Concrete gives the building a weighty presence, yet the strong lines make it feel stretched and elongated rather than bulky. From a distance it reads like a single object; up close it becomes a field of outdoor thresholds—each balcony a small interface between inside and skyline. The overall silhouette is unmistakably of its era, when housing was imagined as megastructure and the facade became a register of daily life. It’s an unapologetic statement: density made visible, turned into a graphic pattern against the city.
