place Maréchal-Foch, Saint-Étienne, France

At the end of the 19th century, two significant developments led to the planning of the Montaud plain in Saint-Étienne. First, the city became the seat of the Loire prefecture, prompting a merger of the city's territories with nearby municipalities. Second, the advent of electricity rendered the gas plant in Montaud obsolete, allowing the gas company to sell its land to the municipality and initiate urban development. However, it was not until 1933 that the Place du Maréchal Foch was constructed, designed at the intersection of the arms of a Saint Andrew's cross; it features an elongated oval shape.
