Saint John the Baptist at the Béguinage
by Lucas Faydherbe · 1657
Place du Béguinage, Belgium
Saint John the Baptist was created in 1657 as a Catholic church. The Beguines were lay women who lived a communal life but were not bound by perpetual vows. Its frontage is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Belgium. The organ in the Saint Mathew Chapel, which dates back to 1678, is by far the oldest originally preserved instrument from the Low Countries.
