The urban sector of the Second Reconstruction in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges emerged after the city was liberated from German occupation in November 1944, during which the historic center was significantly devastated due to a scorched earth policy. Out of 3,339 buildings, 3,144 were either completely or partially destroyed, leading to over 10,500 residents being classified as disaster victims. Numerous public facilities, commercial centers, and factories suffered extensive damage. The reconstruction effort aimed to revitalize the city, addressing the profound impact of the war and restoring its urban fabric.
