Synagogue
Religion · by François Gilbert, Robert Duménil, François Herr, Louard · 1950
55 rue des Bons-Enfants, Rouen, France
The former Sainte-Marie-la-Petite church, designated for Jewish worship in 1865, was repurposed by the Germans during their occupation and used as a first aid post. It was destroyed by a British bomb on May 31, 1944, with only the porch surviving, which was later removed during reconstruction efforts in 1946. Architects François Herr, Robert Duménil, and François Gilbert designed the new synagogue, which was rebuilt at the same location, on the corner of rue des Bons-Enfants and rue de l’Ancienne-Prison, and inaugurated on December 17, 1950. Stained glass windows were crafted by master glassmaker Gabriel Loire.
