The Higashi Honganji Reception Hall in Kyoto is a modern architectural addition to the historic grounds of Higashi Hongan-ji designed by Japanese architect Shin Takamatsu of Shin Takamatsu Architect & Associates and completed in 1998. Conceived as a reception, gallery, and audiovisual space largely built underground to respect the sacred context, the building subtly introduces contemporary form and natural light through skylights while harmonizing with the temple’s traditional wooden structures. It demonstrates a sensitive integration of modern architecture within a culturally significant religious environment.
