The tobacco factory, known as the Manufacture des Tabacs, was authorized for construction in Lyon by a ministerial decision on November 21, 1899, to address insufficient production at the Perrache factory. Established in 1811, the previous facility was located on Quai Gailleton. The new factory, designed by chief engineer Joseph Cugnet of the Central Service of State Manufactures, was built from 1912 to 1932 but began operations in 1927. The original factory continued to be used as a warehouse until 1932, when it was auctioned off. Today, the site houses the University of Lyon III.
