1 Spinningfields Square, Manchester, M3 3AP, United Kingdom
A compact mixed-use building in the Spinningfields district, 1 The Avenue stands on Deansgate beside the Grade I-listed John Rylands Library. Designed by Sheppard Robson, it stacks two mirror-image parallelogram volumes to create a dramatic three-storey cantilever to the east, carried by an inclined steel diagrid. The glass-clad structure combines ground-floor retail with basement hospitality space and upper-level offices, addressing the pedestrian route through Spinningfields. Formerly known as 2 Spinningfields Square, the project formed part of Allied London’s wider redevelopment of the area. Its relatively small footprint and pronounced overhang give prominent street presence while maintaining key local sightlines.
