In the 19th century, the need for new cemeteries around Paris emerged. The decree of March 12, 1801, issued by the first prefect of the Seine, Nicolas Frochot, facilitated the establishment of three major extra-mural cemeteries: Père-Lachaise in the east (opened in 1804), Montparnasse in the south (established in 1824), and Montmartre in the north (opened in 1825). This initiative marked a significant expansion of burial sites catering to the growing population of the Paris region.
