Cité des Castors
Urban planning · by Pierre Ducoloner · 1957
avenue des Castors ; avenue du 7 août ; route du Travail, Bayonne, France
The Cité des Castors emerged in the context of post-World War II reconstruction efforts in France, specifically from 1945 to the 1960s. This movement saw individuals from civil society banding together to develop cooperative housing projects that aligned with their desires for individual homes. The construction of the Cité des Castors in Saint-Amand began in 1951, following approval from the ministry despite opposition from the local municipality. At the time, the Saint-Amand neighborhood was relatively isolated, and the land for the development was purchased from the diocese in 1952.
