Cité dite cité de Gerland

Urban planning · by Robert Auguste, Chollat Émile-Auguste · 1925

13 rue Benjamin-Delessert ; Challemel-Lacour ; rue de l'Effort ; chemin de Gerland, Lyon 7e Arrondissement;Métropole de Lyon, France

The Gerland site historically faced flooding issues, leading to the construction of levees in 1830, which facilitated gradual urban development. In the 19th century, the military and sulfuric acid factories established themselves in the area. Lyon's Mayor Edouard Herriot enlisted architect Tony Garnier in 1905 to design the local abattoirs, followed by the Gerland Stadium in 1913. This period marked the beginning of residential construction aimed at accommodating workers and Italian immigrants, essential for rebuilding efforts after World War I. The master plan for the neighborhood was assigned to Robert Chollat, a disciple of Garnier.
