The University of Nancy, the third largest in France, experienced a rapid increase in student enrollment during the 1920s, leading to housing shortages. In 1929, the university commissioned architect Jean Bourgon to design a new student residence on the recently acquired grounds of Château de Monbois. Construction commenced in October 1930, with the exterior of the buildings completed by June 1931. The complex was inaugurated on November 6, 1932, in the presence of President Albert Lebrun.
