34 avenue Carnot, Clermont-Ferrand, France

The Faculté des Sciences et des Lettres in Clermont-Ferrand was established through imperial decrees in 1854. To accommodate these institutions, the municipality constructed a university palace between 1859 and 1864, designed by Parisian architect Armand Berthelin. The building, located along avenue Vercingétorix and the Lecoq Garden, now houses the rectorate of the Clermont-Ferrand Academy. Despite expansions in 1879-1885 and 1907-1911 by architects Adolphe Gerhardt and Emmanuel Poncelet, the palace has struggled to meet the growing number of students.
