place de Salford, Clermont-Ferrand, France

In 1906, Clermont-Ferrand had a population of 58,363 and featured a main post office, known today as the "poste Gaillard," as well as several auxiliary offices. The central telegraph and telephone office was located next to the prefecture at the end of rue Saint-Esprit. In late 1899, the Puy-de-Dôme General Council, the owner of the building, decided to charge the state rent. In response, the postal administration planned to reorganize its services in Clermont-Ferrand by consolidating telegraph and telephone functions into a larger facility that would include a post office.
