allée Georges-Braque, Fresnes, France

In response to the 1950s housing crisis, the French government provided financial support for self-construction, leading to the expansion of the Castor movement. Founded in 1955, the Local Castor Association of Fresnes aimed to build 800 collective housing units. Architects Charles Thomas and Marcel Roux were commissioned to develop the designs, leveraging Thomas's training under Lurçat and Roux's experience with Le Corbusier. Their plans included seven residential blocks of varying lengths and heights, reaching up to 11 stories, all set within a landscaped park spanning 12 hectares.
