Immeuble le Gymnase

8-10 boulevard Gambetta, Grenoble, France

The demolition of Grenoble's city walls in 1870 opened up former military lands for municipal development. In 1883, the City Council selected a triangular site for a gymnasium, which was constructed in a rectangular plan at its center. By 1905, the gymnasium was deemed inadequate due to the city's growing population, prompting plans for a larger structure. In response to the high demand for the site from architects, the City decided in 1934 to hold a competition for the construction of a building instead of a gymnasium. This led to the development of the "Immeuble le Gymnase" at 8-10 boulevard Gambetta.
