Les Damiers Complex

Collective housing · by jacques binoux and michel folliasson, with abro and henri kandjian · 1976

21–59 Rue de l’Escaut, Paris

Seen from afar, the project reads like a small artificial topography: stepped pyramids of concrete that turn mass into terraces and shadow. Rather than presenting a single facade, it breaks down into repeating modules, letting rhythm and texture do the work that ornament used to do. Deep reveals and rounded relief patterns soften the bluntness of the material, making the surfaces feel almost tactile at street distance. The stepped profile also changes the way daylight reaches the lower levels, creating alternating bands of brightness and cool shade. Circulation is treated as an urban event—stairs, ramps, and landings become moments where the building’s geometry is experienced up close. Overall, it feels less like one building and more like a fragment of city, compressed into a single, intensely modeled mass.
