L’immeuble Les Chardons
Collective housing · by Charles Klein · 1903
9 Rue Claude Chahu, 75116 Paris, France
An Art Nouveau apartment house at the corner of 9 Rue Claude-Chahu and 2 Rue Eugène‑Manuel, Les Chardons was designed by architect Charles Klein and completed in 1903. Its reinforced-concrete frame (Hennebique system) is masked by a richly modeled glazed stoneware cladding by ceramist Émile Muller. A continuous thistle motif animates lintels, spandrels, door surrounds and ironwork, giving the façade a unified decorative program. The building received a medal in the City of Paris façade competition in 1903. Parts of the property—street façade, roofs, entrance vestibule, and the staircase with wrought‑iron railing—have been listed as a Monument historique since 1986.
