Cité-jardin des Abattoirs

Urban planning · by Fernand Rimbert · 1930

place Sylla-Lefèvre, Bernay, France

The Cité-jardin des Abattoirs was developed following the Bonnevay law of 1912, which enabled municipalities and departments to establish their own public housing agencies, thus creating a genuine public service for social housing. In 1929, the newly elected municipality founded the Société Anonyme des Habitations à Bon Marché de Bernay, with Sylla Lefebvre, the first deputy mayor, as its president. This initiative aimed to provide affordable housing solutions for the community and marked a significant step towards organized social housing in Bernay.
