École élémentaire René-Azalbert

Education · by Teppe André-Pierre, Bourély André-Louis, Gisclard-Cau Yvonne · 1956

50 avenue de Perpignan, Sigean, France

The current school group in Sigean was originally built as a complementary school, focusing on education until the age of 14, which was compulsory at the time. It provided four years of education following the certificate of studies, continuing until the brevet, prior to the establishment of modern colleges in 1959. The need for higher education was significant in a predominantly rural society. However, access to these educational opportunities was challenging, as many higher schools were located in prefecture and sub-prefecture cities, making it difficult for children from small towns and rural areas to attend.
