Église Saint Esprit
Religion · by Marcel Pigeire, Léon Blanchet, Ducros · 1968
78 rue Sainte-Geneviève, Montpellier, France
In the 1960s, the Cévennes neighborhood was developed in northern Montpellier for repatriates from Algeria, leading the diocese to establish a new church for the area. The parish was founded on July 19, 1965. Architect Marcel Pigeire, then 35 years old, spent two years aligning his design proposals with the requirements of the diocesan sacred art commission, addressing the evolving needs of liturgy and pastoral care post-Vatican II. Pigeire and project supervisor Abbé Bonnal agreed on two key principles: prioritizing architecture over decoration and emphasizing the use of natural light.
