Maison du Peuple et esplanade
Government & Civic · by Paul Giroud · 1927
1 place de la Résistance, Belfort, France
In 1927, the city of Belfort commissioned architect Paul Giroud to design an urban ensemble as part of its development plan. The project included the construction of the Maison du Peuple, which housed a labor exchange, employment office, library, and meeting and performance rooms, alongside the design of an esplanade bordered by affordable housing. The buildings feature a classical layout and are constructed using reinforced concrete with a column-beam system. The affordable housing units were outfitted with modern amenities for the time, including elevators, central heating, and bathrooms.
