Cité Jean-Jaurès
Urban planning · by Émile Fanjat · 1925
rue de Dole, Besançon, France
The Jean-Jaurès garden city is one of the first projects commissioned by the Doubs Department's Office of Affordable Housing. Following a competition initiated by the municipality in 1925, architect Émile Fanjat's design was selected. The development is intended to accommodate large families of small employees and teachers. The quadrilateral site is intersected by two diagonals at the center, while two other curved streets distribute access to the four sections of the estate. Central to the layout is a school and a large public garden, with commercial spaces aligned along one diagonal. The houses feature irregular stone construction and tiled gable roofs.
